Teeth whitening, safe options at the clinic

What professional whitening can and cannot do, who should wait, and how we protect sensitive teeth.

Bright healthy smile after professional care

Whitening can brighten a smile, but only when the teeth and gums are ready for it and the method matches your starting shade. At Tooth and Gums in Greater Noida, we treat whitening as a careful cosmetic step, not a weekend experiment with mystery kits. I am Dr. Neeraj Chauhan, BDS, and this is how we keep the process safe, predictable, and honest about results.

Teeth pick up stains from tea, coffee, turmeric-heavy meals, smoking, and simply from ageing as enamel becomes more translucent. Surface stains often lift with a professional clean. Deeper colour may need bleaching gel that gently opens enamel pores so pigment can be broken down. Knowing which stain you have prevents disappointment.

Why a check-up comes first

We look for cavities, leaking fillings, and gum inflammation before any whitening gel touches your teeth. Bleaching over decay or onto exposed roots can sting and will not fix those problems. Crowns, veneers, and tooth-coloured fillings do not bleach the way natural enamel does, so we plan around them or discuss replacing old restorations later if shade matching matters to you.

Sensitivity history matters too. If cold water already makes you wince, we may choose a milder protocol, shorter sessions, or desensitising toothpaste beforehand. Whitening should not feel like an endurance test.

In-clinic whitening, explained simply

Clinic whitening uses measured peroxide gels under our control. We protect the gums with a barrier, apply the gel to the enamel, and time the contact carefully. Some systems use light; the gel chemistry does most of the work either way. You leave with a noticeable change in one visit, though the exact number of shades depends on your starting colour and enamel thickness.

  • Examine teeth and gums and treat urgent problems first
  • Clean away tartar and surface stains so gel can work evenly
  • Protect soft tissues and apply professional-strength gel
  • Monitor sensitivity during the session and rinse thoroughly
  • Advise on aftercare and optional take-home trays if useful

Mild tingling or temporary sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles within a day or two. Avoid staining foods and drinks for a short window while the enamel surface rebalances—dark tea, coffee, red sauces, and tobacco are the usual culprits. Clear water and lighter meals make that period easier.

Custom take-home trays

For some patients we make soft trays that hold a milder gel you wear at home for shorter daily periods. This spreads the change over one to two weeks and can be gentler for sensitive teeth. Trays must fit well; loose boil-and-bite gadgets from a shop often bathe the gums in gel and waste product on the tongue.

We show you how much gel to place—usually a small bead per tooth. More gel does not mean a whiter smile; it means more chance of gum irritation. Store gel as directed and stop and contact us if burning persists.

What whitening cannot do

Bleaching will not change the colour of crowns or veneers. It may not fully erase bands from older tetracycline staining or white spots from enamel development issues. Greyish tones linked to a non-vital tooth sometimes need internal approaches or a restorative plan instead. We would rather set a realistic target than promise a magazine white that your enamel cannot reach safely.

Over-the-counter strips and charcoal powders vary widely. Some lightly help surface stains; others abrade enamel or inflame gums. If you have already tried them and feel uneven colour or roughness, tell us before we add clinic whitening on top. We would rather reset expectations than stack strong gel on enamel that is already irritated.

Keeping the result longer

No whitening is permanent because life continues—chai included. Good cleaning, periodic professional polish, and the occasional touch-up tray maintain brightness. Cutting down continuous sipping of staining drinks helps more than any single product. If you grind your teeth, enamel wear can also change how colour shows; a night guard may protect both shade and tooth structure.

  • Healthy gums and sealed fillings
  • Stains from tea, coffee, or smoking
  • Realistic shade goals
  • Active decay or leaking restorations
  • Very exposed sensitive roots
  • Pregnancy — we postpone elective whitening
